WHY NOW?

Over the years, a new fire station has been discussed. We believe now is the time for a new facility. Not only is it becoming blatantly obvious that a new fire station is needed, the ambulance building is becoming insufficient too. Both buildings are beyond their useful lifespan and retrofitting them is not economically feasible. Therefore, combining the two facilities makes the most sense and is the most cost effective.

ELGIN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT:

The current Fire Station was built nearly 60 years ago and it is showing. The condition of the building is failing and the costs of repairs and constant maintenance is becoming too much. Our present Fire Station…

  • Is too small it hampers firefighter ability to quickly get dressed in turnout gear and to quickly mount trucks.
  • Has a leaky roof
  • Is poorly heated and insulated
  • Has inadequate training, storage and office space
  • Has only one bathroom without a shower
  • Does not meet OSHA or ADA standards
  • Requires custom built trucks to fit the building

ELGIN VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE SERVICE:

The current ambulance building was the former Olmsted Medical Center building and was built about 30 years ago. It was not built as an ambulance service. The hope was to expand the training room to the basement however, due to intermittent flooding during heavy rainfall it has not been feasible. Our present ambulance building…

  • Has inadequate training, storage and office space
  • The garage is too small
  • The basement has flooded and continues to leak during inclement weather
  • Has only one sleeping quarter and one shower
  • Does not meet OSHA or ADA standards
  • Was not originally built as an ambulance service
